We’ll learn many different activities in the last few lessons. So in this one, let’s learn to ask people what they’re doing, starting with the Chinese words that means “to do.” 做zuò means “to do,” and it has the fourth falling tone. So, 做zuò. 你在做什么?Nǐ zài zuò shénme?You are doing what?

That’s how we ask people what they’re doing in Chinese. The subject 你nǐ is at the very front, and the question is at the end. We can answer that question in many ways. For example, if we’re exercising, we could say我在锻炼Wǒ zài duànliàn. 做zuòcan also mean “to make.” So, if we’re making bread, we could also say我在做面包Wǒ zài zuò miànbāo. What do we do after we make the bread? We have to eat it, of course.我在吃面包Wǒ zài chī miànbāo.
